TPG Web Hosting FAQs

Who and What is The Present Group?
The Present Group was founded in 2006 by Eleanor and Oliver Wise out of the desire to create affordable and sustainable models for funding artists. In their first three years, their subscription art project has channeled over $20,000 toward funding artist projects, stipends, and development of critical essays. To learn more about their subscription project, go here. This hosting project is yet another attempt to create a sustainable revenue stream for artist grants. top ↑

Why web hosting?
Because it's something many of us are paying for anyway. Instead of spending our profits on semi-pornographic super bowl commercials like Godaddy, we'll use them to recognize worthy artists and fund artist projects that we all collectively choose. top ↑

How will the granting process work?
For each grant we will announce a theme ahead of time and provide an opportunity for all hostees to vote on the grant recipient (here are the specifics). We will create a record on this website of all grants given. Grant intervals may be variable. If you have an idea for a theme, use our hosting support form to let us know why you think it's important. top ↑

What do I need to start a website?
You need a domain name and a host (that's us!). You can get a domain name here or other locations and usually they cost around $10 per year. Once you are set up with us, we'll send you the address to point your domain name to. After that, you probably will want some sort of CMS to manage your content (all the stuff you want put on your website). We offer free installation of one of two free, open source, and good lookin' CMS: Word Press and Indexhibit. top ↑

Who can host with TPG?
Our focus is primarily on hosting for small, content-driven websites. Artists, support artists! We're not looking to host any large-scale, resource-intensive websites. For this reason we will turn away very high-bandwidth websites or really complex websites running a large number of scripts. The reason for this is that it helps us maintain high quality server performance. top ↑

Are there any restrictions?
Yep! You've got to be doing stuff that's legal. And we certainly can't have any spammers or hackers. If we find violations of these parameters, The Present Group reserves the right to terminate services with or take action to stop the offending customer from violating these ground rules as we deem appropriate, without notice. We also reserve the right to report any illegal activities to any and all regulatory, administrative and/or governmental authorities for appropriate prosecution. top ↑

Do I have to use WordPress or IndExhibit?
No. We're just trying to make life one step easier for those without a website already. We also have no connection with these websites; we just know they're fairly easy to use, super customizable, and have some good looking, free themes ready for you. top ↑

How does the billing work?
You pay for one year when signing up. Within a month of your renewal date, we will invoice you. If we do not receive payment after 1.5 months past due, we will terminate your hosting. Sorry.. top ↑

I want to help promote this idea on my site. How should I do that?
Hey, thanks! You are welcome to write about us in any way. Another way is to install this lovely little icon somewhere on your site. The more people we have, the more grants we can give.
